Renault Scala
The new Renault Scala is basically the Nissan Sunny. It's a case of
badge-engineering, just like the Pulse and Micra. And, like the Pulse,
the Scala looks a lot more appealing than the Sunny thanks to the large,
aggressive grille, stylish headlights and new alloy wheels. The rear
bumper features a blacked-out section that mimics a diffuser, which
helps reduce the car's visual bulk. When viewed in profile, the Scala is
exactly the same as the Sunny, save for the attractive new alloys.
Overall though, the Scala looks much more balanced and proportioned than
its cousin from Nissan.
Engine options for the Scala are the 1.5-litre dCi motor and the
1.5-litre petrol. We drove the diesel model which produces a decent
84.8bhp and 20.4kgm of torque. On urban roads, it is quite good to
drive. Half-throttle responses are good and once past the initial
turbo-lag, the engine feels quite responsive. It's only when going
uphill with a full load that the throttle lag becomes apparent and the
Scala struggles to gather decent pace. The car feels best in the
mid-range and you have adequate passing power on tap. However, on an
open highway you will feel a slight shortage of power and find yourself
constantly shifting gears to keep the motor on the boil. And, with power
tapering off as early as 3800rpm, it's best to use the gears and keep
the engine in the mid-range.

New Mercedes SUVs
Mercedes-Benz may have pioneered the luxury car segment in India and
initially enjoyed a first-mover advantage, but BMW and Audi have
recently nosed ahead. And that’s primarily down to one simple fact:
Mercedes has a giant hole in its product portfolio. While BMW has the X3
and X1 SUVs and Audi has the Q5 and Q3, Mercedes has no product in the
same segment.
However, this is now set to change. Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, revealed to Autocar India recently that Mercedes is planning the introduction of not one but two brand new SUVs for the Indian market.
The smaller of the two will be the yet-to-be-revealed GLA, which will compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Based on Mercedes’ new MFA front-wheel-drive transverse-engine architecture, just like the new A- and B-class, this space-efficient SUV is expected to take the Mercedes brand to a whole new set of SUV buyers. The styling is said to be as edgy as the new A-class, the cabin is reputed to be ‘very spacious’ and designers say some of the youthful exuberance seen on the interior of the A-class will be carried over to the GLA as well.
Unlike manufacturers like Audi or BMW, Mercedes will not build its compact SUV on an extended wheelbase. Both the new B-class and the new A-class share the same 2700mm wheelbase, and the new GLA is likely to do so too.

Nissan Evalia
MPVs are more about space maximisation than style and this is more than
evident on the Evalia, which won’t win itself too many admirers for its
design. The frontal styling is pleasant, thanks to the smart grille
that flows into the rising headlamps. But viewed from the side, the
Evalia looks more like a cargo van that’s been adapted for private use
than your typical modern MPV. The slab-like sides and square-ish tail
lack any stylistic flair whatsoever, and the puny 14-inch wheels corrupt
the overall appearance further.
