Tata,Toyota,volkswagen & Yamaha at expo

Tata Motors

Tata unveiled its new Safari Storme at the Expo. The Storme isn’t an all-new Safari, but a thoroughly revised version of the existing one. It is powered by the 2.2-litre, 16-valve common-rail DiCOR engine on duty in other Tata cars. Tata also displayed the Manza hybrid concept, a series and parallel hybrid that uses a three-cylinder version of Tata’s 1.4-litre DiCOR engine, known as the 1.05 DiCOR. This three-cylinder engine is also expected to power the Vista at a later stage. A CNG version of the Nano is also on display. Tata is also showcasing its new range of next-gen commercial vehicles.

Toyota

Toyota has launched an array of products at this year’s Auto Expo. The list of launches includes the new Innova, new Fortuner and the new Land Cruiser 200. The new Innova gets redesigned interiors to make it more upmarket and a face-lift as well. The new face-lifted Fortuner now comes in 2WD automatic and manual variants alongside the 4x4 manual variant. Toyota also launched its Indian motorsport effort in the form of the one-make series, called ‘Etios Motor Racing’, which will launch only in 2013. It showcased the race-prepared Etios and Liva at the expo. Also on display at the stall are the new Camry, the updated Prius hybrid the rest of the company’s current range.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen unveiled the new Touraeg SUV at the Auto Expo. Styling of the all-new 2012 version is attractive to say the least. Under the hood, the SUV is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel that develops around 240bhp. The Touraeg will go on sale in April this year. The German automaker also showcased its XL1 concept - a low-drag, teardrop-shaped two-seater that, according to the company, has a mind-blowing fuel consumption figure of 111kpl.  Also on display is the new VW Beetle in its latest avatar.

Yamaha

Yamaha has lifted the lid on its first ever Indian scooter which is slated to launch later in 2012. Called the Ray for now, the name is subject to change though by the time the scooter hits showrooms. The scooter displayed at the Auto Expo is currently in its concept stage. Yamaha is also displaying a new limited edition YZF-R15 Version 2.0 variant in white and fiery red.

Toyota Prius+ review

The Toyota Prius+ is a new three-row, seven-seat version of the Prius hybrid that is likely to be introduced next June. Buyers of people-carriers, Toyota says, are getting worried about their cars’ economy. Choose something with the seven-seat carrying capacity you need, they complain, and you’ll be stuck with vehicle that consumes more fuel than you can afford.

Toyota can expect success with its Prius+, mostly because few rivals can match its 50mpg-plus. Its main drawback is that the rear seats are too cramped for European-sized adults, but then, cars like this are mostly for kid-carrying anyway. For that purpose, the Prius+ is ideal.

 Price: £25,000 (est); Top speed: 106mph; 0-62mph: 11.8sec; Economy: 57.7mpg (combined); CO2: 99g/km; Engine type: 1797cc, 16v, 4cyl petrol + electric motor; Power: 98bhp + 80bhp; Torque: 105lb ft + 152lb ft; EV range: 2 miles; Gearbox: CVT

Toyota Yaris hybrid review

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

Price: £17,500 (est); Top speed: 110mph (est); 0-62 mph: 12.0sec; Economy: 75mpg (combined); EV range: 1.3 miles; Engine type, cc: 1496cc, 4cyl, 16v; Motor: Battery electric; Power: 73bhp + 26bhp; Torque: na; Gearbox: stepless CVT

Should I buy one?

If saving fuel and producing a minimum of CO2 are vital to your motoring, this will be a good car to own, though it will take genuine real-world testing to affirm that it’s usefully better than the Yaris diesel, which emits only 104g/km of CO2 and costs a cool £3000 less. The rear coup, we can’t help thinking, will come when Toyota unites a modern, small capacity direct injection turbodiesel with its Prius mechanicals. That’ll be a real economy car.

2012 Toyota Innova - Exclusive first drive

The Innova doesn’t need an introduction. It went straight to the top of its class when it was launched six years ago and is still untouchable. In fact this probably is a record of sorts - despite being on the market, essentially unchanged, it still commands a waiting list! Despite being the staple of taxi fleets all over the country it still is very popular among private buyers. How then do you improve upon an MUV that is nearly close to perfection? The last revision to the Innova was the mild facelift a couple of years ago and now it gets a second facelift.
So what’s new? The most noticeable change is the revised front end. Gone are those tear-drop headlamps and in come sharper and sleeker headlamps that give the face an all-new look, the trapezoidal front grille is similar to other Toyota models and very similar to the new Fortuner while the front bumper is also completely redesigned and accommodates new fog lamps

Inside, it’s the same dashboard with minimal changes. A double-din DVD stereo system is standard in the top end variant. The screen also displays the parking camera video. Mock wood surrounds in the centre console have been removed and is replaced with a brushed aluminium effect console. The instrument cluster too is different and the steering wheel is straight out of the Corolla offering stereo and mobile phone controls in the higher variants.
There are no engine upgrades and it’s the same 2.5-litre diesel that does duty. The common rail engine puts out 102PS of maximum power at 3600rpm and peak torque of 200Nm is available from 1400-3400rpm. The petrol version; a 2.0-litre 16-valve engine produces 132PS of maximum power at 5600rpm and maximum torque of 181Nm at 4000rpm. The Innova has always been a comfortable vehicle to travel in and has been the benchmark in its segment. The new upgrade hasn’t changed the car drastically but makes it feels fresh. The prices are not yet confirmed but expect a marginal increase over the older model. The new Innova will be launched at the Delhi Auto Expo and expect the waiting period to only increase.
