DC Avanti: India's first Super car

The well known Indian automotive design house, DC Design has unveiled its supercar called the Avanti. According to reports, the car has been named after the Studbaker Avanti that appeared in Tintin comics. The idea behind the Avanti, which means 'forward' in Italian, is to make affordable supercars and the car is expected to be price

The car was unveiled by Amitabh Bachchan and will initially come powered by a 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine from Ford, and later a turbo V6 Honda engine. The 4-cylinder turbo petrol will make 265 hp, while the V6 engine will make 400 hp.

The Avanti is expected to do a sub-seven second zero to hundred timing. These engines are mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission system. According to the reports, the engines are being tuned in the UK and will be shipped to India in crates where they will be installed the cars. Much like the engines, most of the other components that go into the cars will also be imported into the country. However, the body and interiors are being ...

It was also reported that DC Design is also setting up showrooms across the country in order to sell the Avanti Supercar. The first of these showrooms will be launched in Hyderabad. The showrooms will also stock other DC products. The 1560 kg Avanti looks more along the lines of a Lotus Evora, rather than a full-fledged Ferrari 458-like supercar. DC Design aims on manufacturing 200 cars a year, which means it would produce one car every two days....

The curious case of 'smart for-us'

The smart for-us is a mobility concept. It translates the practical loading concept of a pickup to the reality of 21st century urban traffic. It has ample room for two people and also has space behind for two smart ebikes, which can charge their batteries on the cargo area during the journey. It is small, agile and does not need any petrol thanks to its electric drive. Thanks to the state-of-the-art electric drive with a 55 kW magneto-electric motor the zero-emission smart for-us is agile and lively to drive.

Ford Fiesta AT Review

The Fiesta sedan, currently on sale here, too will get something new in 2012. The sedan is now offered with either a 1.5-litre diesel and petrol engine which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. However the company is soon going to offer the Fiesta with its double clutch Powershift gearbox. The Powershift ‘box has recently been introduced and packs in some revolutionary technologies. For example when the brakes are applied the gearbox disconnects from the drive which is claimed by Ford to increase efficiency. However expect a much higher pricetag making it a more premium purchase than it is now.

New Swift Dzire review, test drive

The second-generation Dzire is quite different from the car it replaces. For starters, it’s only 3995mm long so it is a whole 165mm shorter than its predecessor. To keep length under the crucial four-metre mark, the new Swift sports an extremely short boot. As a result, the new Dzire looks more a notchback than a proper saloon.

We first broke the news about the sub-four-metre new Swift Dzire on our website on December 31, 2010. We also brought you the first pictures of the car in our May 2011 issue. As you can tell, we have been tracing the evolution of this car very closely and that’s because a saloon car for potential small car money is not easy to ignore.

Mini Cooper review and test drive

he Mini is finally coming to India. However, we have been living with its legacy ever since the first Maruti 800. Most small cars even today are front-wheel-drive with transversely mounted, water-cooled engines, a configuration popularised by the first Mini designed by Sir Alec Issigonis in 1959. This configuration enabled the car to achieve truly micro-car exterior dimensions along with a surprising amount of usable space inside. The car was affordable, stylish, fun to drive and easy to park anywhere. It quickly achieved cult status across the world.

he 122bhp petrol motor provides enough of a kick for most folks. But it isn’t the muscle under its hood that’s the Mini’s selling point. It’s the car’s agility. The steering is accurate and nicely weighted. The shift is precise and light. Body control is excellent and it changes direction keenly. Even the pedals bleed precision. Point it toward a serpentine road and you will be amply rewarded. It’s like a go-kart for adults. The downside is a rather firm ride, but that’s the price you pay for the Mini’s thrilling handling.

Now if you want even more style, get the convertible with the retractable roof. It’s not a hard-top but rather a conventional cloth unit, and it’s a clever little arrangement. Press the switch and the roof slides back 45cm to give a large sunroof-like opening. Press the switch again and the ‘Z-roof’ unlatches and scissors up and back to fold neatly behind the rear seats in 15 seconds. The downside is that rear visibility with the top down is very poor since it stacks up rather high. With the top up, it’s even worse.

New Porsche Boxster revealed

hese are the first official pictures of the third-generation Porsche Boxster, ahead of its first public airing at the Geneva motor show in March.
Porsche says the Boxster will go on sale in some global markest on April 28, flaunting a lightweight aluminium body and a roomier 911-style interior. It will have the choice of two upgraded versions of Porsche’s classic horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine, both boasting direct injection, slight power gains and impressive reductions in fuel consumption.
The most dramatic change surrounds the new Boxster’s styling, credited to designers working under Porsche design boss, Michael Mauer. The new Boxster adopts a cab forward stance. Heavily sculptured flanks feature longer doors, larger wheel houses to accommodate wheels up to 20 inches in diameter, and a rear end reminiscent of the classic 911 ducktail.
Porsche confirmed the new Boxster has a longer wheelbase and wider tracks which allow for a roomier interior, which takes its cues from the new 911. The new Boxster – codenamed 981 – comes with a fully automatic cloth hood, no longer requiring manual assistance. It stows behind the cabin in a fully exposed position, with no need for a tonneau cover.

BMW launches M5 sport saloon

The 552bhp super Saloon has been launched in India at a price tag of Rs 95.9 lakh.

BMW has launched its new M5 sports saloon at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi. Like all previous M5s, the new car's styling is subtle but aggressive in its details, most notably the lower air intakes – three gaping ducts to flow cool air into the radiator, oil cooler and turbochargers. 19-inch alloy wheels come as standard fitment.
The M5 features a twin-turbo, 4.4-litre V8 that offers 552bhp and 69.4kgm of max torque, and the sports saloon can hit 100kph in 4.4 seconds, and 200kph in 13sec (manufacturer’s claims). The new M5 gets a power boost of 10 percent and torque figures are up by 30 percent compared to the previous-generation, V10-powered E60 M5.
The transmission is a seven-speed, dual-clutch unit with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters, which drives through a new Active M differential with electronically-controlled, multi-plate, limited-slip differential. Depending on the driving situation the diff can lock between 0 and 100 per cent, says BMW.
An M-specific chassis set-up includes M-tuned Servotronic steering, cockpit-adjustable dynamic damping and stability control with an ‘M Dynamic’ setting. Steering wheel buttons that can be programmed with chassis, engine and diff settings can now memorise two individual set-ups as compared to the single setting option on the earlier M Drive button.
The all-new BMW M5 has been priced at Rs 95.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Peugeot displays its wares at the Expo

The French brand to make its Indian comeback all guns blazing with premium models.

French carmaker Peugeot is set to re-enter the Indian car market soon and we got a glimpse of what is in store for us at the Expo.
While French cars are known for their quirky styling, the Peugeots at the Expo are anything but. The company showed the stylish 508 saloon which made its international debut two years ago. This will be the flagship model when it is launched and is expected to be powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine. It should be as spacious as the Honda Accord and given its classy styling, space and diesel powerplant option, it should be a great model for Peugeot to start with.
Also present at the Peugeot stall was the 3008 crossover, which looks like a mix between a SUV and MPV. It offers what Peugeot calls a ‘Multiflex’ interior where the seats fold all the way up to the front passenger seat, allowing a flat loading space. Also showcased was a technical cut-out of the 3008 HYbrid4, the world’s first diesel hybrid that goes on sale in Europe next year.

Mahindra unveils REVA NXR

The NXR will be offered with three battery options – small, medium and large – to cater to a variety of driving ranges.

Mahindra showcased the production ready prototype of the NXR electric vehicle at the expo. The REVAi successor looks much more appealing and will have more variants too.
The badges of the production version have changed from the large REVA logo on the front grille to the Mahindra logo and the NXR logo with four leaves is used in the rear. The rest of the vehicle remains unchanged. The NXR uses parts from the Mahindra parts bin to keep costs in check. Despite this, making the NXR more appealing has made it a little more expensive. The company expects infrastructure support from the government to source, distribute and charge a range of electric vehicles and subsidy for its EV.
The NXR will be offered with three battery options – small, medium and large – to cater to a variety of driving ranges. There will be two kinds of batteries – lithium ion and lead acid but Mahindra will focus more on lithium ion variants.
Engineers responsible for the NXR’s development have also worked on the Verito electric vehicle. The conventional engine has been swapped with a 29KW (39.4bhp) electric motor. The company claims the Verito Electric has a range of 100km on full charge and a top speed of 86k

Maruti Ertiga unveiled at Auto Expo

Maruti has unveiled its new Ertiga compact MPV at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. The Ertiga, which is due to go on sale by late-March 2012, is Maruti’s first crack at the MPV segment. Based on an extended Swift platform, the Ertiga carries the Maruti family look with the front resembling the Ritz hatchback while the peeled-back headlights that stretch to the pronounced wheel arches are reminiscent of the new Swift. The front bumper styling is quite sporty with a large air inlet and neat enclosures for the fog lights. Tail styling looks rather generic though. The overall length is 4265mm so the Ertiga does not qualify for excise benefits available to sub four-metre cars.
Maruti has extended the Swift wheelbase to 2740mm and this has allowed the inclusion of a third row of seats – the Ertiga can seat seven passengers in a 2+3+2 layout. Flexible seating also allows you to reconfigure the seats to free up luggage space by folding the last row and also individual seats on the middle row. The cabin features a combination of black and beige plastics and this gives it an upmarket look. However, the dashboard design is identical to the Swift. The Ertiga will be offered in three trim levels on both petrol and diesel versions, and though climate control will not be offered on any model, a twin AC system will be part of standard kit.
Maruti will debut the new K14B petrol engine on the Ertiga. The latest addition to the K-Series engine family produces 93.87bhp at 6000rpm and 13.25kgm at 4000rpm. If the 16.02kpl ARAI-tested figure is anything to go by, real-world fuel economy from this motor should be good too. The Ertiga uses the same gearbox as the Swift though the gear ratios have been tweaked to compensate for the heavier loads the engine will be subject to. Also on offer will be the 89bhp, 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine from the SX4.

Renault launches Pulse at Rs 5.77 lakh

Renault has launched the Pulse hatchback at the Auto Expo. This car is a mildly altered version of Nissan’s rather clever Micra.
Under the skin, the two are basically the same. They share the same lightweight V-platform chassis, the same basic suspension and the same gearbox, but unlike the Micra, the Pulse comes with only a 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out 63bhp and 16.3kgm torque.
What Renault has altered however are the looks. While the basic architecture of the car - with its large arched roof and big cabin - remains, Renault has changed the nose dramatically. The front end is now much sharper-looking, with its raised, crisply styled lights, almost Hyundai-like hexagonal grille and a typical Renault matt-black centre section. The car has a much stronger chin than the Micra, the rear has been mildly altered and Renault says there could be an even sportier version of the car on the cards too. The interiors of the Pulse however are almost identical to those of the Micra, right down to colours and shades.
The Pulse gets an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 23.08kpl. Two trim levels are on offer, both feature automatic start-stop and a driver airbag as standard equipment. Also on offer is a unique 2+2 year 80,000km warranty. The base RXL is priced at Rs 5.77 lakh and it comes with a manual A/C and steel wheels. The top-end RXZ is priced at Rs 6.25 lakh and it comes loaded with alloy wheels, automatic climate control, fog lamps and a leather-wrapped shifter.
The Pulse will be built at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai plant alongside the Micra.
Pulse Prices:  (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Diesel Variant only
Pulse RXL: Rs 5.77 lakh
Pulse RXZ Rs 6.25 lakh
Nissan Micra prices (Diesel) (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Micra Base: Rs Rs 5.73 lakh
Micra XV: Rs 6.17 lakh

Toyota Prius+ review

The Toyota Prius+ is a new three-row, seven-seat version of the Prius hybrid that is likely to be introduced next June. Buyers of people-carriers, Toyota says, are getting worried about their cars’ economy. Choose something with the seven-seat carrying capacity you need, they complain, and you’ll be stuck with vehicle that consumes more fuel than you can afford.

Toyota can expect success with its Prius+, mostly because few rivals can match its 50mpg-plus. Its main drawback is that the rear seats are too cramped for European-sized adults, but then, cars like this are mostly for kid-carrying anyway. For that purpose, the Prius+ is ideal.

 Price: £25,000 (est); Top speed: 106mph; 0-62mph: 11.8sec; Economy: 57.7mpg (combined); CO2: 99g/km; Engine type: 1797cc, 16v, 4cyl petrol + electric motor; Power: 98bhp + 80bhp; Torque: 105lb ft + 152lb ft; EV range: 2 miles; Gearbox: CVT

Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Zetec S review

The acceleration figures means this Ford Focus just about qualifies for the warm hatch status implied by its war-paint. What you’ll be more impressed are this diesel’s manners, which are smoothly unobtrusive until well past 4000rpm, a rev range that you rarely need explore because it musters decent enough shove much earlier.
The result is confident, restful progress that while not providing scintillating acceleration, does allow you carry enough speed into corners to benefit from the revised chassis. Which certainly delivers a firmer ride, but one that remains very capable over battered B roads, these absorbed with a taut civility.

 Price: £21,385; Top speed: 135mph; 0-62mph: 8.6sec; Economy: 56.5mpg combined; Co2: 129g/km; Kerbweight: 1412kg; Engine: four cyls, in-line, 1997cc; Power: 161bhp at 3750rpm; Torque: 251lb ft at 2000-3250rpm; Gearbox: 6-spd manual

Bajaj’s RE60 four-wheeler revealed

Bajaj Auto has just revealed its first low-cost, four-wheeled city vehicle ahead of the Auto Expo in New Delhi.
Called the RE60, the vehicle aims to set new benchmarks for four-wheelers in the areas of fuel-efficiency and emissions, returning a claimed 35kpl and emitting just 60g of CO2 per kilometre.
This is possible mostly thanks to the RE60’s lightweight, rigid, metal-polymer hybrid monocoque construction, which keeps the vehicle’s kerb weight at just under 400kg. Also playing a major role is the liquid-cooled, four-stroke DTSi engine. The 200cc, single-cylinder unit is rear-mounted, produces approximately 20bhp and uses a closed-loop fuel injection system.
The car is intended for intra-city use with a footprint not much bigger than that of an auto rickshaw, which is interesting, because Bajaj is marketing it as a safer, better-appointed alternative to a three-wheeler rather than a conventional passenger car.
“At Bajaj Auto, we believe the people of this planet deserve much better, much faster,” said managing director Rajiv Bajaj.
“We are presenting an optimised solution for intra-city passenger transport. This vehicle has been designed for intra-city use, keeping in mind the intra-city duty cycles and safety requirements.”
He further emphasised that the vehicle’s development required minimal investment, and no additional infrastructure, resources, huge subsidies or time.
At first glance, the short wheelbase, upright glasshouse, and skinny wheels give the RE60 a comical stance. However, a closer look reveals a smart urban face, with headlights that have a Renault touch to their design. There is no grille under the RE badge on the snout.
The interiors are also Spartan – the dash has the instrument cluster in the centre with stowage boxes on either side. However, there is a lot of storage space in the cabin. The seats look quite basic and the rear bench is flat and an evolution of the rickshaw bench. The commercial-vehicle version of the RE60 shown at the launch even had an auto rickshaw meter fitted to the dash.
The windows don’t roll down, but instead are split in the middle and flip down. Further evidence of the car’s low-cost positioning is the absence of front headrests, the lack of roof lining and the exclusion of inertia reels on the seatbelts.
The RE60 features 2+2 or 1+3 seating layout options, a 44-litre boot and a top speed of 70kph. Its 2.75m length, 1.3m width and 3.5m turning circle radius should make it very manoeuvrable in city traffic.
